SHORT POEMS AND MICRO-STORIES

SPELL CHECK

oh the old way
with books of paper and ink and leather
words that run in the rain
and fade with the sun

electronically retarded
yesica lost patience and attention with the smelly old book

she wanted the power so much
wanted it so much that she wasn’t prepared to work for it
wasn’t prepared to wait for it
wasn’t prepared

half-read
quarter-digested
even less understood
she set out to control the world with her magic spells
spells older than the world itself

young yesica
impatient
retarded
span a web around herself
and made the spider’s job easy…

STARDUST TO STARDUST

of the beginnings and the ends of the stories
we know little

only the space in between
ours to fill as we like or we must
opens it’s heart to us

the wind can blow on an empty plain
trees can shiver under a tropical downpour
glaciers creeping slowly in a race to some unimaginable finish line

children’s laughter can herald a new era
where armies with their bombs flags and trumpets
barely merit attention

the seed to us
the fallen leaves
the sap-filled
or broken rotting
tree

beyond our short-sighted scope of activity
we live the days of a ripe fruit
eaten by ants or monkeys

a fruit
the flavour of which
the only small thing we can decide

KNIGHT FALL

on the black and white chessboard of the nocturnal/diurnal cycle
we all play set roles
and make our stands

one side must win
and the other lose
this is the game we feel impelled to play

good and evil
false enemies
bound together on the same gameboard

the spinning planet
moving faster and faster as it tries to shake us off
feels one part of itself warmed by the sun
while another cools

yet loves and hates each part
and the sun
and deep space
all the same

ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER

a journey that never ends is simple
we put one foot in front of the other
and repeat
and so on

for me
poetry is like this

maybe i’m dull
maybe i lack vigour or colour or zest
or angles

i put one word in front of the other
keep my head down
and move forward

a neverending journey has no goal
but movement feels much better!
